The 4th Global Conference of MIS Implants in the Bahamas was not only a spectacular event but also a very special one. Three unique days that radically changed the experience of what is —and what it should be— a dental congress. The event experimented with formats, forms and issues in a way that was innovative and bold, where tradition and innovation coexisted perfectly with demanding scientific requirements in the casual and exotic venue where it took place.

The tropical fantasy of the Atlantis Resort, a Las Vegas-style hotel complex on Paradise Island, Nassai, was the setting for of this Feb. 8-11 4th Global Conference of MIS Implants, which presented some of the most renowned clinicians and researchers worldwide.

Coordinated impeccably by Prof. Lior Shapira, president of the scientific committee, the congress attracted over 1,000 people and started with a series of hands-on workshops.

The international cast of lecturers consisted of Emilio Argüello (USA), Yuval Jacoby (Israel), Vincent Fehmer (Switzerland), Moshe Goldstein (Israel) and Ignacio Sanz Sánchez (Spain), who met the important practical dimension that dentistry always demands.

The workshops also touched upon relevant topics in current implantology, such as 3D planning and guided surgery, bone augmentation, aspects of the cone prosthetic connection or a new hybrid protocol for the rehabilitation of the edentulous patient.

The second day was reserved for the heavyweights. As expected, their presentations were spectacular, very professional and scientificly solid.

A giant widescreen reproduced the faces and presentations of experts such as Eric Van Dooren (Belgium), Myron Nevins (USA), Joseph Kan (USA), Mauro Fradeani (Italy) or Edward P. Allen (USA), among others, who offered a program marked by their command of the stage and the clinical excellence of their presentations.

They talks focused on topics such as “Optimizing the perio-prosthetic interface of implant restorations in the esthetic zone - new concepts and techniques” (Van Dooren); “Prevent peri-implantitis and plan for long-term success” (Nevins); “Immediate implant and provisionalization in the esthetic zone: lessons learned in 20 years” (Kan) or “The interdisciplinary approach to esthetic rehabilitation – from a traditional to a digital approach” (Fradeani).

Dental Tribune interviewed Joseph Kan and Mauro Fradeani and will publish the interviews shortly (watch the videos now at youtube latinoamerica).

The presentation of Dr. Kan, professor at Loma Linda University, was fun, ironic and instructive, showing the case that launched him to fame but ended in failure. Fradeani, considered one of the fathers of dental esthetics, astonished the audience by mixing manual and digital prosthetic rehabilitation procedures. In the interview with the Dental Tribune, he describes in detail the advantages of GETApp, its application to guide the esthetic prosthetic treatment.

TED-style Lectures

The most revolutionary and ambitious part of the 4th Global Conference of MIS Implants were the TED-style talks on Implant Dentistry, presented independently by TEDx and called TEDxMIS Sessions.

This wide series of lectures of approximately 15 minutes each, on the third day of the event, focused not on clinical procedures but on concepts and ideas of young speakers, who addressed original topics rarely presented at dental congresses.

The sessions began with a kind of rock concert, with music, tribal percussion and dancers wrapped in smoke and theatrical spotlights, which set the avant-garde tone of what would come next.

Speakers such as Mirela Feraru (Israel), Tommie Van de Velde (Belgium) Juan Arias Romero (Spain), Victor Clavijo (Brazil), Pablo Galindo-Moreno (Spain), Gustavo Giordani (Brazil), Anas Aloum (UAE), Stavros Pelekanos (Greece) or Tali Chackartchi (Israel), proposed perceptive paradigm changes in the way dentistry is understood.

Quick and forceful, the sessions addressed topics that had not been announced, ranging from how the first experience of going to the dentist marks the perception that develops later, to the influence of robotics in the clinic, the perseverance necessary to overcome obstacles and succeed, or the advantages of augmented reality in dental education.

The nature of these sessions had strong intellectual and emotional components, conceived to challenge preset conceptions and help inspire the audience to develop their own initiatives.

The breakthrough format of these sessions, as well as the quality of the presentations, is something completely new and original never before seen in a dental congress, something that many other dental congress organizers should take note of and emulate.

If the scientific part was remarkable, the social program was spectacular: it began the first day with a night concert on the beach by the British rock band Dire Straits, and it ended the last night of the conference with the performance of a DJ in the same tropical setting.

The surprise of these two music shows, whose stars as well as the themes of the speakers of TEDxMIS were not announced in the program, was another special element of this really sensational 4th MIS Global Conference.
