BIETIGHEIM-BISSINGEN, Germany: As part of prophylactic treatment, fluoridation plays a major role in the protection against caries. In addition, it can halt the progression of pre-existing initial lesions. Dürr Dental, producer of the Lunos range of dental consumables, explains how its Lunos Fluoride varnish and gel can help to safely harden the tooth surface.

Fluoridation should be integrated into prophylactic treatment, especially for patients who are susceptible to caries. This group of high-risk patients includes pregnant women, patients with a previous history of caries, patients with fixed orthodontic appliances or dentures, as well as older patients. Generally speaking, there are two different ways for fluoride to be applied: systemically or locally. For professional treatments as part of dental prophylaxis, the main focus is on local fluoridation measures. These are applied after professional tooth cleaning or after individual prophylactic treatments, as well as on the teeth of patients who are at high risk of caries. Therapists have access to different products for this purpose.

The choice of the correct product depends on the application. For example, for general fluoridation measures after professional tooth cleaning, it is recommended that an economical gel-based product is used. This makes it possible to work with relatively short application and drying times. This type of product does not leave an annoying film on the teeth after application and causes no adverse aesthetic effects for the patient. By contrast, if there is a high risk of caries, initial lesions or hypersensitivity, then a varnish-based product is recommended with a correspondingly higher fluoride dose. Lunos Fluoride varnish is used, for example, to desensitise sensitive tooth surfaces and to protect the tooth against acid attacks. It is used for the treatment and protection of hypersensitive teeth and for the sealing of dentinal tubules during cavity preparations or sensitive root surfaces. It is easy to apply and very economical. In addition, it bonds reliably to moist surfaces, which means that it can be a real option particularly for younger patients. During application, painful intensive drying of the surface can be avoided.

Lunos Fluoride varnish contains 22,600 ppm of sodium fluoride and can make its way into the saliva after application if it wears off or is rubbed off. This means that small amounts can also be swallowed. To prevent any risk of overdosing, only small amounts should be applied to the teeth. Patients must avoid eating solid food, cleaning their teeth or using dental floss for a period of four hours after the treatment. Once applied, the fluoride varnish offers increased protection for several weeks. Lunos Fluoride gel is suitable for application after professional tooth cleaning or as part of individual prophylaxis. It contains 12,300 ppm of sodium fluoride, supports remineralisation and inhibits plaque formation. With its extremely short application time and its pleasant taste, use of the fluoride gel is very comfortable for the patient. The gel can be applied with a small applicator or with a drug carrier.

Swallowing of the fluoride gel should be avoided. It is therefore only recommended for use on patients who have control over their swallowing reflex. Children under the age of 6 or patients with certain physical disabilities should therefore not be treated with Lunos Fluoride gel as part of prophylactic treatment.
